چرا نمی نویسی؟

در سال ۱۷۸۴ بنجامین فرنکلین در نامه ای خطاب به بنجامین وب که از او تقاضای کمک مالی کرده بود مینوسد:

من نامه شما را دریافت کردم و شرح حال شما مرا پریشان کرد. با این نامه مبلغ … را برای شما میفرستم. اما من این مبلغ را بلاعوض به شما نمیدهم و تنها به شما قرض میدهم. وقتی که به کشور خود بازگشتید حتما کاری دست و پا خواهید کرد و در بعد از مدتی خواهید توانست تمام قرض خود را پس دهید. اگر چنین شد زمانی که فرد درستکاری را مستحق کمک یافتید باید قرض من را با قرض دادن این مبلغ به آن شخص پرداخت کنید و او را مجاب کنید که این روند را همینطور ادامه دهد. امیدوارم این قرض بدین شکل به دست عده زیادی برسد. من آنقدر پولدار نیستم که بتوانم کارهای خوب زیادی انجام دهم و لذا مجبورم با اندک پولی که دارم بیشترین کاری را که میشود انجام دهم.

A 1784 letter from Ben Franklin to Benjamin Webb, an American in France who applied for his aid:

Dear Sir,

I received yours of the 15th Instant, and the Memorial it inclosed. The account they give of your situation grieves me. I send you herewith a Bill for Ten Louis d’ors. I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you shall return to your Country with a good Character, you cannot fail of getting into some Business, that will in time enable you to pay all your Debts. In that Case, when you meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro’ many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money. I am not rich enough to afford much in good works, and so am obliged to be cunning and make the most of a little. With best wishes for the success of your Memorial, and your future prosperity, I am, dear Sir, your most obedient servant,

Google Chrome on the rise?

This is from the Google Analytics report for the past month on my blog. I had noticed that recently Google Chrome is begin used more often among my blog viewers. But this month it has passed Internet Explorer, now taking the second place after Firefox:

My audience, however, is largely biased. Looking at the worldwide market-share here, as of May 2010, IE is leading the game, with Firefox and Chrome following it with a rather large gap.

At any rate, regardless of whether it’s the second or the third, Chrome is definitely gaining ground in the browser market.
